Lumillio Nemea Nordic Ash planters in an outdoor setting

Choosing illuminated terrace planters starts with the terrace plan, not the finish sample. A planter that looks right in a product photograph may leave too little room behind a dining chair, interrupt a view or sit too far from a practical power connection.

For architects, landscape designers and project buyers, a useful specification brings four decisions together: material, size, planting and position. Resolve those before quantities are fixed, and the supplier can respond to a defined requirement rather than an attractive but incomplete reference image.

Choose the material, then confirm the application

Two Lumillio collections provide a starting point for terrace schemes. Collection Nemea brings thermowood surfaces into the design; Collection Strata uses architectural ceramic. Both are presented for indoor and outdoor settings.

Compare them against the actual paving, furniture and facade samples. Timber may suit a scheme that needs another natural texture. Ceramic may be a closer visual match for mineral surfaces. These are design choices, not evidence that one material will perform better at your particular site.

Check the selected product, not just the collection name. Nordic Ash lists thermo ash, aluminium and opal glass; Graphite lists dry-pressed ceramic, aluminium and opal glass. Give Lumillio the exposure conditions and ask for the relevant installation and care instructions. An outdoor designation alone does not settle questions about an exposed rooftop, coastal position or seasonal storage.

Use product dimensions, not size names

Prima, Torre and Largo are model names, not universal measurements. Compare the published sizes for Nordic Ash and Graphite before placing them on a drawing.

Selected sizes listed on the product pages
Product Model Published dimensions (mm)
Nordic Ash Prima 366 x 366 x 360
Nordic Ash Torre 366 x 366 x 750
Nordic Ash Largo 280 x 980 x 360
Graphite Prima 300 x 300 x 630
Graphite Cubo 600 x 600 x 630
Graphite Largo 300 x 1000 x 530

These are published product dimensions, not confirmed internal planting dimensions. Request a dimensioned drawing and usable planting volume before the planting contractor selects root balls or nursery containers. Also establish the filled weight and handling method before agreeing the delivery route or final position.

Draw the mature planting canopy as well as the planter. A narrow container does not necessarily create a narrow arrangement. On a compact terrace, leaves extending into a route can matter as much as the container itself.

Test placement against the terrace in use

Start with one job for each position: mark an entrance, separate seating from circulation, or frame a view. Then test the arrangement with chairs pulled out, doors open and service routes in use.

A simple on-site footprint mock-up can reveal problems that a mood board misses. Use temporary markers to check the proposed arrangement during a service walk-through before committing to quantities.

Coordinate light, water and access

Nordic Ash and Graphite list 3000K LED lighting, with dimming and remote control offered as options. Record the required configuration in the schedule rather than assuming these controls are included.

Review the illuminated planter from the tables and from inside the building, not only from the terrace entrance. Ask how it will be switched alongside the wider lighting scheme. Keep functional route lighting as a separate design requirement.

Plan watering at the same time as electrical access. Ask how excess water is managed, where connections will sit and how components can be reached for servicing. Leave room for cleaning around the base and replacing plants without dismantling the seating layout. The product listings state that plants are not included, so assign responsibility for the planting package explicitly.

Send a brief that can be quoted accurately

Send a marked-up plan with position references, quantities, preferred finish and model, exposure notes, planting requirements and the intended lighting controls. Include the delivery route and any unresolved dimensional or installation questions.

Use Lumillio’s B2B project service to discuss the specification. The objective is a coordinated selection that the designer, supplier, installer and planting contractor can all work from.
